In Southern Crete, in the crystal clear waters of the Libyan Sea, there is a remarkable undersea life.
For many years, professional divers have organized trips in this area of the Mediterranean Sea.
Kalypso Rock's Palace Dive Center operates legally with licenses and insurance required by law, having built facilities on Karavos beach in South Crete. Karavos beach is a natural park surrounded by hanging rocks making it a private secluded bay in the Central Mediterranean, ideal for underwater activities when the weather is fine. The facilities of Kalypso Cretan Village 4* Resort and Spa are adapted to the divers’ needs.
In the nearby area of Kalypso, the coastal tourist resort of Plakias (south of Rethymnon) provides all the necessary tourist services. The undersea activities are very popular with for experienced divers, who are always impressed by the underwater world of South Crete.
Kalypso Rock's Palace Dive Center has developed a friendly discovery programme of the undersea world (step by step), either by snorkeling or scuba diving. For experienced divers we offer various underwater tours and we organise boat trips (fully-equipped rental boat with diving license) to explore the Libyan Sea, the bottom of the sea, the caves, the rich diversity of fauna and flora.
The diving courses are followed by guided undersea trips to the fjords.
Divers receive a certificate of attendance and underwater photos taken from a professional photographer.
Kalypso is a very particular place and one the characteristics of this place are the rocks that embrace the whole area. In the last years, the management of Kalypso Cretan Village Resort & Spa 4* in cooperation with some of the best rock climbers in Greece have created and organized this special activity inside the facilities of the hotel, which is something unique in Crete.
The climbing routes in Kalypso have different levels of difficulty and are appropriate for both beginners and experts. The guests can use these routes for free and can enjoy a special experience combined with a unique view at the Libyan sea.
Passionates of rock climbing have various options in the wider area of Plakias, since this is a well-organized activity in this part of Crete. Paligremnos rock climbing routes, in the imposing vertical rock in Plakias, are also very popular and attract many fans of this activity every year. The climbing routes of Agii Saranda, very close to Kalypso, complete a great variety for the lovers of this sport in the area of Plakias.
Mountain Bicyling Around Plakias
Mountain bicycling is combined with the particularity of Kalypso and the wider area of Plakias with the wonderful beaches as long as the imposing mountains. Guests can supply their mountain bicycles from Kalypso Cretan Village Resort & Spa 4* and take a tour, as is the following around Kalypso and the wider area of Plakias.
Route around Kalypso includes some of the most beautiful beaches of Creta like Damnoni, Ammoudi, Souda of Plakias and other smallers, besides to high mountains with huge view and mild climate. From Kalypso we are bicycling to the coastal road (4km) and we are crossing the beautiful beaches of Damnoni and Amoudi (4km) and we continue through a forest of olive trees, passing the picturesque villages Lefkogia and Gianniou, we arrive to the historical and impressive Monastery PREVELI with huge view to the sea (7km). After a small break we sholve from an asphalt road between a forest of olives trees and we arrive to Mega river to the Byzantine bridge where a coffee break beside the river is revitalizing us (4km) and continuing the asphalt road (4km) we arrive to the picturesque village Asomatos where we can visit the Museum of traditional tools and the pottery workshop. From Asomatos between woody vegetation and beside to running water and huge view to the sea, we pass beside the picturesque village Mariou and arrive to the traditional village Mirthios (5km asphalt and earth road) where we have a break with soft drinks enjoying the impressive view of the area and the sea, and continue through the imposing gorge of Kotsifos, the asphalt road up to traditional village Sellia (5km) where we can visit laboratories of popular art (pottery workshop and jewels) the local culture museum and the admirable church of Virgin Mary. We sholve an asphalt road (4,5km) up to a rare beauty beach with self-sown palms, SOUDA where we can swim and to have lunch time. From Souda starts our return besides the sea in an asphalt road (8km) passing from the centre of the developed turistic area, PLAKIAS where we can have a short guiding and to buy something we need.
Mountain Bicycling in Kotsyfos Gorge
Starting from Kalypso through the ‘Kotsifos’ gorge you have the chance to have the most original cup of local herbal tea in Kanevos (480 m ). Then cycling for about 14kms through the picturesque green valley of Agios Vasilios (the heart of agricultural activities of the area. There will be a combination of asphalt and rural roads through olive groves with very old olive trees, small oak forests, farms and vineyards. On arrival at the historic village of Koxare, 10mins stop at Mr Dimitris’ old kafenion for a raki or coffee and a chance to learn some facts about its history and to get a photo with the old people.
Cycling for another 5 km of a very pleasant smooth downhill ride we will arrive at the impressive gorge of Kourtaliotis where we will park our bikes and prepare for the trek towards the springs at the bottom of the gorge. We will hear interesting facts and stories about the wild bird- life of this habitat ( e.g Golden Eagle ) from our guide who has specialized in bird watching and protection in this area for many years. The descent towards the springs through bushes of wild oregano and thyme is an unforgettable experience. Arriving at the springs most people enjoy a super bath and a natural Jacuzzi. With all this rejuvenating energy from the springs we will climb up tο our bicycles .We will cycle the last 1 and a half kilometers to exit the gorge with the view of Preveli valley in front of us and then as we turn we face the only kilometer of gradual uphill ride which is very easy to cross with our Shimano equipped bicycles and the assistance of our guides who will always cycle next to you.
On arrival to the village of Asomatos we will park our bikes and walk in the narrow streets of this tiny village before we arrive at the folk museum of Papa Michalis, an oasis of green vegetation which hides and reveals objects and documents of Greek cultural tradition, gathered aimlessly for many years by this living legend. You will also have the chance to see a young local ceramist who keeps a very old tradition of pottery making and you may also buy the pure organic local olive oil from the producer.
We cross small rivers while hiking. You need to swim well and be in good shape.
Equipment: hiking shoes to protect your ankles, neoprene socks, waterproof backpack, helmet, knee braces and elbow support, a 20 m safety rope and sunglasses.
1) It starts from Preveli Bridge (Megas Potamos - Great River). There is free transfer for Kalypso Cretan Village Resort & Spa guests, 10’ from Kalypso. Through Preveli Gorge and an exotic palm grove, we reach the wonderful beach “Preveli Lake” in 3-4 hours. You’ll find imposing tropical nature.
Back to PLAKIAS by little ship or car.
2) It starts from the village of Mixorouma. 20’ from Kalypso. We cross a river surrounded by native plants and we pass through old abandoned watermills, churches and the village itself.
We get in the stunning gorge of MESA FARAGI by walking next to and inside the river. We reach Preveli Bridge and we continue to walk along or across the river, through Preveli Gorge. We end up at the palm grove of Preveli and to a beach called “Preveli Lake” in 5-6 hours.
Along this historical trail you will find tropical gorgeous nature.
We come back to the hotel by little ship to Plakias or by car.
For abseiling we use rock climbing equipment.
Although it seems a simple sport to do, it needs the right training, preparation and help from a professional climber. It certainly needs concentration and inner balance but it is a fun challenge that activates intense emotions.
It demands both physical and mental health.
The plethora of beautiful beaches both at Kalypso and around it has lead to great tourist development in the whole area. However, it is only these beaches which attract visitors. Above Plakias, the Kotsifou gorge, traversed by car, is very imposing with its narrow entrance from the north. Further east, the road again passes through the majestic Kourtaliotiko gorge. The river formed by the waters of the Kourtaliotis and known as Megalos Potamos, then flow through a little gorge amidst numerous Theophrastus’ palm trees; its mouth on the beach constitutes one of the most important natural beauty spots on Crete. In the lovely villages of the area, most of which have tourist facilities, there are a number of Byzantine churches. The most important religious monument in the region is the Monastery of Preveli, or Piso Moni as it is called, although a stop at the old monastery, a little before it, is compelling. The enjoyable mild climate, specially during may, June, September and October with wide range of colours from 950 kinds of flowers, herbs and other plants in nature, surrounded from the blue colour of sky and sea, make somebody to walk to cross this paradise through selected routes, and result is to revitalizing his self.
Walking around Kalypso Cretan Village gives the walker the opportunity to enjoy the endless view of the Mediterranean, the towering mountains above the sea, the thousands of flowers and the traditional villages of the region. We have created some very nice walking paths towards two directions: one towards Plakias (on the west) and another one towards the beautiful beach of Damnoni (on the east). Walk two hours with a guide, swim in the beautiful sea, go rock climbing or enjoy a traditional drink.
The route around Kalypso include some of the most beautiful beaches of Creta like Damnoni, Amoudi and more smaller (2km with asphalt and earth road) . Continuing route inside a forest of olive trees (5,5km asphalt and earth road) we visit the picturesque villages Lefkogia and Asomatos, the museum of traditional tools and pottery workshop. From Asomatos inside from woody vegetation and beside from running water and huge view of the sea, passing the picturesque village Mariou we arrive to the traditional village Mirthios (5km asphalt and earth road) when we have a break enjoying the impressive view of the area and sea and refreshed we sholve through an impressive path (2km) until to arrive the bottom of a gorge where running waters, ancient water mills and the woody vegetation are ecstatic and at the end there is the coastal turist area PLAKIAS where we can buy something we need and during a small break we can swim in the sea and to have a lunch. Continuing there is a coastal route (4km road with asphalt and an impressive path) that take us back to Kalypso keeping in our memory for ever unforgettable pictures.
Imposing tour through the Kourtaliotiko gorge down to the Preveli beach with dynamic changes of the environment during the walking. You will enjoy the spectacular views down the gorge and the surrounding mountains which provide a roosting site for the Griffon Vulture. We start walking in the morning in the middle of the Kourtaliotiko gorge. First we will walk down 260 stone stairs to the Agios Nikolaos church. Near to the church is a view point from where you can see the Kourtaliotiko waterfalls. Then we will follow the pathway from the waterfalls along the river to the bottom of the gorge. On the way you will meet remains of the old hippie houses. We will come out in front of the old olive mill. Then we will continue walking through the fields until the Venetian bridge. After a short break for a snack near the bridge or a short swimming in the little lake of the river we will take the right side of the river and continue up to the hills of the gorge. On the way you will enjoy the spectacular views down the gorge until the views open to the view down to the delta of the Megalopotamos river. The gorge ends at the sea creating a small lake surrounded by palm trees, at Preveli beach. The beach of Preveli is one of the most famous beaches in Crete, beautiful and romantic and there you will have 2-3 hours time for sunbathing, swimming or having a lunch. From Preveli beach we will return back to Plakias by boat.
The European long-distance paths are a network of long-distance footpaths that traverse Europe. The European Path E4 comes along Greece, between different countries, and part of it is located on Crete. One stage of this path is between the villages Agouseliana and Spili. This stage is very close to Plakias and Kalypso and is worth hiking for people who enjoy this activity. The length of this stage of European Path E4 is about 13km and the estimated time is about 4 hours.
